Staff Predictions: Penn State vs. Michigan

One last ride before the bye week.
Penn State football is set to battle the Michigan Wolverines at Michigan Stadium on Saturday. The Nittany Lions fell to USC in the White Out in Week 6 to drop to 0-3 in Big Ten play to open the season.
Michigan hasn’t exactly been the Big Ten powerhouse it usually is, either. The Wolverines have struggled in their first half-season under Kyle Whittingham, sitting at 3-2 with no conference wins following their bye week.
Will Penn State finally add a win before its week off against a reeling Michigan team? Here’s what our staff thinks:
Brian Kriley (4-2): Penn State 17, Michigan 13
Despite the White Out loss, I thought the Nittany Lions looked better last week. Michigan hasn’t shown much more than Penn State so far this year, and I’m in a good mood. Give me the Nittany Lions on the road.
Christopher Green (1-2): Penn State 27, Michigan 24
I think it’s time for Penn State’s first Big Ten win.
It proved it can perform under intense pressure in the USC game. The biggest challenges for Penn State will be game management and third-down conversions. However, I think Michigan has been struggling enough to give Penn State the edge in the Big House.
Cooper Allmaras (0-3): Penn State 21, Michigan 19
I think this game will be a close defensive battle. Both teams seem lost at this point in the season, but someone needs to win.
I think Matt Campbell will win the coaching battle when he realizes he needs to turn it around on the field.
Holden Mostofsky (3-3): Penn State 20, Michigan 17
I’ll stick with my word from last week.
I said Penn State would beat either USC or Michigan, so I’ll give the Nittany Lions one more chance because my prediction record is cooked right now. I believe in my team, and Penn State will get it right eventually.
Ian Becker (0-3): Penn State 16, Michigan 17
A matchup between two of college football’s most underwhelming teams this season. This will be a slugfest; an eyesore for the neutrals out there.
Both offenses are mediocre at best. Michigan’s defense actually looks good, though, while Penn State’s has not. Also, every time I’ve picked the Nittany Lions, they’ve lost. Maybe picking against them will remedy their woes.
Jake Speicher (2-1): Penn State 30, Michigan 20
Penn State’s catastrophic fall last season ended with a sixth-straight loss to Indiana. I’ve heard all the parallels being drawn between this season and last, and they continue with a trip to Ann Arbor, Michigan.
But I don’t think the fall from grace will be as dramatic this time. If there’s ever a time to be optimistic, it’s now.
Penn State WILL make another bowl game, Penn State WILL find a way to score in the red zone, Penn State WILL stop the run, and Penn State WILL beat Michigan once again.
Jason Perry (4-1): Penn State 17, Michigan 24
Neither team looks very good, but Michigan will have the home-field advantage. Penn State needs a bounce-back win, but I don’t see it happening on the road.
Laura Wells (0-1): Penn State 17, Michigan 27
As much as I love the Nittany Lions and want to say they are going to win, I would just be lying to myself. I would say Penn State would have had a chance if it were a home game, but on the road and in a Big Ten game, I don’t think the team can pull off a win.
There is always next year, I guess.
Michael Zeno (4-2): Penn State 4, Michigan 6
They will talk about this game in the history books forever.
Tadhg Gorman (1-2): Penn State 31, Michigan 25
After a somewhat close game with USC, I hope Penn State can finally win again against a mediocre Michigan.
Zach Paulhamus (1-2): Penn State 13, Michigan 20
I don’t think Penn State has the manpower or depth to leave the Big House with a win. Without Koby Howard, this offense seriously might need an alarm clock and a strongly worded email to wake up.
As always, I hope I’m wrong, but I’m also preparing myself for a long Saturday.
Brandon Collica (2-3): Penn State 10, Michigan 20
The horrible losing streak continues on the road against the Wolverines. Michigan is still a solid team, and with the beat-up Nittany Lions playing in the Big House, a win will be tough to come by. Michigan will get the win in the mid-off.
Cadyn Gill (4-2): Penn State 16, Michigan 20
I see this as a low-scoring game, with two mediocre-at-best offenses poking at each other before Michigan steals it late in the fourth quarter.
A lot of folks have argued that Bryce Underwood “sucks,” but players who possess that many ways to beat you are terrifying to game plan for.
We’ve also seen how poorly this Penn State team plays in the trenches against Big Ten competition. Michigan will have arguably the best offensive line and power-run scheme the Nittany Lions will see all year, including Jason Beck’s “rhino” position, a jumbo tight end who serves as a sixth offensive lineman.
The blue and white have shown absolutely nothing to make me believe they can match that tenacity at the line of scrimmage. Throw in the road-game aspect, too? I don’t see Campbell getting his first conference win here.
Jamie Lynch (3-3): Penn State 20, Michigan 17
I said in 2020 if there’s one thing that would distract me from Penn State’s miserable season, it would be a win over Michigan.
I don’t like anything about the Wolverines; never have, never will. Just win. I don’t care how.
Oscar Orellana (4-2): Penn State 10, Michigan 13
Strap in, folks. It’s going to be an ugly one. But there is some beauty in that.
Can Penn State compete with Michigan in the trenches? No.
Can Penn State stop Underwood if he gets loose on the ground, even with all his misgivings? No.
Can Penn State move the ball downfield effectively against the nation’s No. 3-ranked total defense? No.
Will it probably be closer than expected and blossom into a classic Big Ten boxing match, with each team failing to deliver the final blow? Probably.
And I will be there. But give me Penn State to reach rock bottom heading into the bye week.
