Greeks Sweep Up State Patty’s Day Mess

This past Sunday was a great day for the Greek Community. A handful of Greek organizations participated in Delta Upsilon's "Greek Sweep" to clean up the leftover mess from State Patty's Day. Participants chipped in for the cost of cleaning supplies and all received T-shirts to represent the event. Just several days before, the IFC announced their initiative to sponsor "Greek Sweep" events to be held after major-event weekends.

Read on for a statement from Justin Robinson, President of Delta Upsilon, about how his chapter came up with the idea.

IFC CORE Program: Fraternity Values

At President's Council on Tuesday evening, Chapter Presidents unanimously voted to approve the new IFC CORE Program: Commitment to Outreach and Responsible Education. The overall mission of this program is to bring fraternities back to the values upon which its Chapters were founded. Here's how it works:

Chapters will be divided into three divisions based on their total number of members. The purpose of this division is to level the playing field for what I'm about to explain next. Chapters will compete within their divisions for points to be accumulated throughout the semester, and at the end, each division will have one winner.

The points are based off of three major categories - Community Service, Philanthropy, and Educational Programming. For more details on how chapters can receive points, read the full story.

ESPN Says Nittany Lions are Most Valuable Team in Big Ten

I came across this article listing the 12 most valuable teams in NCAA football. The website, Business Pundit, collected opinion from various sports authorities about the most valuable teams and compiled them into a ranked list.

Penn State came in at 3rd place (under the Texas Longhorns and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish). But what caught my eye was the paragraph about Penn State.

Another highly valued NCAA football team with a rich history is Penn State’s Nittany Lions, said by ESPN to be the most valuable team in the NCAA’s Big Ten conference. ESPN reports that Penn State’s “team value is $99 million, and the program makes a profit of $50 million.” Its ranking as the third most valuable NCAA football team is a ten spot leap for Penn State from the last time rankings were compiled. Coached by the legendary Joe Paterno (who earns roughly $1.5 million per season), Penn State figures to continue its run as one of the most prosperous college football teams in the country for quite some time.

Do you agree with ESPN's opinion?? Either way, good for us! Go State!

iPad Perfect for College Students?

By now, I'm sure everyone has heard about Apple's new release - the giant iPhone the iPad. A few days ago, I came across an Associated Press article discussing how the new iPad will be perfect for college students. This is definitely an idea I thought about when I first heard of the release, but I have mixed feelings about how well the iPad will be for class-goers.

I'll preface my discussion by letting you know that I'm an avid Mac user and have been all of my college life. I worked in an Apple retail store in the summer of 2008 and have been following Apple Inc. since 2006. Let's see how biased I am....

EA Games at PSU Fraternities

Last year, the popular game publisher EA Games started a "Gaming Chair" program here at Penn State. The program required the Penn State EA Representative to find fraternities that would be interested in receiving free EA games, gear, and swag items....must've been pretty hard, I know.

Here's how the program worked - at the beginning of each month, EA would send the campus representative a "Frat Pack" for a specific EA Game. This "Frat Pack" would include two copies of the game (1 for the Gaming Chair and 1 to give away at the tournament), posters for advertising the event, an EA Banner, and small swag items.

The Gaming Chair is responsible for receiving each pack from the campus representative at the beginning of each month and then setting up an event in their organization for people to come and play. They then would get feedback from participants and submit it, along with photos of the event, to the campus representative who would then submit it to EA. The best part? It's all FREE!!!
