Entrepreneurs ("hackers") of all walks of life -- coders, graphic designers, engineers, marketers -- will "hack" (create prototypes) for 36 hours straight at HackPSU, Penn State's hackathon. The competition, hosted at the IST Building, will run from tomorrow night at 10 p.m. until 10 a.m. on Sunday.
Sponsored again by student-run accelerator Innoblue, the event will feature students from a wide-array of schools including: the University of Michigan, the University of Pennsylvania, and Carnegie Mellon University. The event is free to all attendees, mainly due to it's sponsorships from State College-based software developer Videon Central, IST Startup Week, and Readyforce.
With government funding decreasing across the board for most local agencies, the Schlow Centre Region Library hasn't been able to escape a similar fate either.
The library's state funding has decreased from $623,283 in 2008 to $419,030 in 2014, resulting in a cumulative total of $982,571 lost in aid over that time period. To attempt to make up for the budgetary restraints placed on it by the state, the library's donations and increase funding from the Centre Region Council of Goverments has greatly increased, but there is still a budget shortfall. In order to make the shortfall hurt a little less, the library has decided to close for the week of May 12th to the 18th.
The College of Agriculture Sciences will be hosting their annual Ag Day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. today outside both the Creamery and in Alumni Hall at the HUB. The event offers students a chance to see what students are doing in the college, which was the original foundation of the university.
The inaugural State of State Conference will take place this Sunday in Alumni Hall from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The student-run event will include 15 speakers--5 faculty members, 4 alumni, and 6 students--who will speak about issues facing Penn State that go along with the event's theme, "Past, Present, Progress."
A$AP Rocky has been announced as the headliner for the 40th Anniversary of Penn State's free end of the year concert, Movin' On. The Harlem-based rapper is known for hits like "Fuckin' Problems", "Wild for the Night", and "Goldie". The rapper has collaborated with the likes of Drake, 2 Chainz, Kendrick Lamar, and Skrillex.
Penn State unveiled a new version of eLion over Spring Break designed to work more efficiently on mobile devices. Although the site is intended to work better on mobile devices, users have reported warnings that the site isn’t optimized for their device. This comes around a year from eLion’s last update, giving students little time to get used to the new system.
