Most of you probably haven't heard the name of J.M. Coetzee. Regardless, it's still a big deal, since Coetzee, an acclaimed South African-born author, will be on hand at Penn State on Thursday evening to be honored with a medal by the Institute of Arts and Humanities, as well as to give a reading from some of his works. The ceremony begins at 7 p.m. in the State Theatre.
We're already halfway through a very brisk autumn here in Happy Valley. The trees on campus have taken some gorgeous golden, orange, and red hues, and the ground is covered in tempting piles of leaves, just begging to be jumped into. 'Tis the season for hayrides, Halloween parties, and Thanksgiving feasts. Drink accordingly.

The Senate met yesterday in the Kern Building to discuss and vote on two motions that would send statements of disapproval to the NCAA on behalf of the Penn State faculty. Both motions seemed to garner very little verbal support, and neither passed following a vote.
