As soon as classes are out for spring, the majority of the student population flees Happy Valley, only to return for drunken meddling on random weekends like Arts Fest. But there are some students who become know as the "summer stragglers," who find semi-gainful employment at assorted downtown establishments or talk their parents into letting them take summer session classes.
Apart from being that annual summer weekend when everyone descends back into State College to reunite, the Central Pennsylvania Festival for the Arts actually has a primary function, and a really good one at that. When you walk around downtown, there's a ton of really great artwork and performances that make you wonder to yourself, "What brought all this stuff to the middle of Pennsylvania?"
There will be another "Blue Out" during the September 22nd game against Temple. Stuart Shapiro and Laura March, creators of last year’s Blue Out during the Nebraska game, have partnered with One Heart and the Penn State Athletic Department to create an annual “Blue Out” game to continue the fight against child sexual abuse.
Downtown State College, like many college towns, is known for its various drinking establishments. One of those bars is even receiving a bit of national recognition. Men's Health recently named the "Best College Beer Bars in America," and Zeno's was one of the top twenty.
After years of requests for a discounted meal plan for students who live off campus, Housing and Food Services is just now offering plans designed to give "commuter" students a discount at on campus eateries. Well, sort of.
Kelly Dolak, a former Penn State student and a current film professor at Ramapo College, sees the Sandusky scandal in a different light than your average outsider. As an alumna, Dolak felt a connection to our student body when the news broke in November, and she set off with her camera to the chaos of State College, unsure of what was to come.
