Rolling into the Derby Season with SCAR

It’s that time of the year once again for tough chicks to break out their fishnet stockings and eyeliner. Roller derby season is upon us.

Just  in case you didn’t see Whip It, roller derby is that sport where chicks on wheels beat the living day lights of each other to score points. And  SCAR is State College’s own roller derby association.

Last year, the derby premiered with the Saint Valentine’s Day Massacre. SCAR has fittingly chosen to open this season with the second installment of this soon-to-be State College annual sports extravaganza. Plus, what could be more romantic than watching girls pummel each other in attempts for victory?

So mark your calendars for Saturday, February 18th. The Pennsyltucky Punishers face the Mount Nittany Mayhem at Penn Skates. Tickets are only $8, and kids (10 and under) get in for free. The event is being held at the Penn Skates roller rink, located right by the airport. It’s a little out of the way, but certainly worth the drive.

After that event, the next bout isn’t til April, but not to worry. If you think you’ve got what it takes, SCAR is holding tryouts to see will be the next rollergirls of State College.

Tryouts are on February 26 at Penn Skates, but if you’re really serious SCAR is holding a clinic on February 19 to prepare for the actual tryouts. It’s $25  and you’ll need full pads, mouth guard, helmet, and a bad-ass attitude. Luckily, if you don’t have skates the rink will provide them. The skills learned in the clinic will be used on tryout day with physical tests like stopping, falling, stepping on skates, technique, etc. Also, there will be time and/or endurance exercises.

And so it will be, on February 26 I will learn all about what it takes to be a roller derby girl. Yes, I am trying out for a derby team, and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t scared to death. Either I’ll be broken in half or I should start thinking up a killer derby name. Amanda AnnihilateHer? Thrash by Dash?

Start the season out right. Grab some friends and pull up a chair to watch girls skate and duke it out for glory. Then after seeing the beating these girls take, if you have enough courage, come try out. Imagine Bruce Lee on rollerskates. It’s that badass.
