Penn State Love Stories: Part 1
Earlier this week, I asked our readers to share their stories about how they fell in love at Penn State. I was overwhelmed with responses — more than 300 people replied within the first three days, and responses are still rolling in. (A big thank you to everyone who shared their stories with me!)
Because of the high number of awesome stories, I’ll be sharing a few every Friday about Nittany Lions who found love in Happy Valley. Personally, I can think of no better way to punctuate the week than by reading stories about Penn Staters’ serendipitous meetings and Lion Shrine proposals.
But first, some stats! Of the first 250 people we heard from:
27 had State College proposals
25 met through Greek Life
24 met in class
20 met in the same residence hall
20 met at bars
15 had State College weddings
11 met in the same apartment building
10 were brought together by THON
7 had Penn State themed weddings
6 met at Indigo
3 entered their wedding to “Zombie Nation”
3 entered their wedding to the Penn State “Fight Song”
2 were Blue Band members
1 fell in love with (not at, with) Yummy Cafe
And now, our first three love stories:
Jeremy and Carly
He is: Jeremy Baumgarten, Class of 2010
She is: Carly Millan, Class of 2012
They first met: At a Penn State Hillel speed-dating event at Irving’s
Now they’re: Dating
And they’ve been together: 3 ½ years
Their soundbite: “We played late night tennis at the Penn State Tennis Center over State Patty’s weekend. I thought it was cool that Jeremy would rather play tennis with me than go out and get crunk like all the other crazies!”
Nick and Ashley
He is: Nick Smolak, Class of 2008
She is: Ashley Smolak, Class of 2009
They first met: At a party (she spotted him playing beer pong across the room)
Now they’re: Married, with a baby on the way any day now!
And have been together: 7 years
Their soundbite: “We were married in [May 2012] and are now expecting our first child any day now! Baby’s PSU blanket and hat are packed for the hospital!”
Mike and Kelly
He is: Mike Miller, Class of 1985
She is: Kelly Waldman Miller, Class of 1986
They first met: In the fall of 1984, at his fraternity. He’s tall, and he noticed that she was also tall, so he brought it up. She didn’t appreciate being called out for being tall, though she ended up saying “I do” four years later.
Now they’re: Married
And have been together: 29 years
Their soundbite: “Now our son is a junior and loving life at Penn State, just like we did. Our daughter will be attending Penn State in three years, and I plan on warning her about guys who may comment on her height!”
Check back next Friday for some more Nittany Lion love!
