Join Onward State: Visual Staff Application

Do you have a passion for all things Penn State? Want to get an insider look at what happens here? Got an eye for Old Main photos or an itch to make graphics? Most importantly, do ya like to have fun?

We’re looking for students to join our growing visual staff — this could be photographers, videographers, or graphic designers. Our photographers have the opportunity to take photos of all types of events at Penn State in addition to everyday shots of our beautiful campus. Many of our followers aren’t on campus, so we use photos to show a slice of Penn State life (what’s happening on campus on any given day).

For videographers, we’re looking for people who want to create short videos we can share on social media. We want to tell the Penn State story in a way our followers will want to share with their followers. A written story doesn’t always do every concept justice, and neither do photos. Think of the addicting Facebook photos you get stuck watching, but about Penn State and student life here.

We’re interested in graphic designers who want to make snarky featured images for our posts and for social media (think: Eric Barron swimming in cash). Graphics like these make incredible additions to our posts that some might consider tomfoolery, but we think are just fun.

Every visual staffer is expected to contribute to the blog on a consistent, weekly basis with both visual content and ideas for stories and coverage. We generally meet on Sunday evenings and attendance is mandatory.

Students from all majors and walks of Penn State life are encouraged to apply. If you love what we do and you love Penn State, you’ll fit right in. Apply below and we’ll get back to you if we like what we see on your application.

Applications are due November 28 (the Monday we come back from Thanksgiving break). If you have any questions, shoot an email to Lexi Shimkonis (one of our managing editors) at [email protected].
