Staff Picks: What Should Beaver Stadium Be Used For…Besides Football?
Have you ever walked past Beaver Stadium and thought to yourself, “With the second-largest stadium in the western hemisphere, Penn State should use Beaver Stadium for something other than football.” Well, you’re not alone!
With one of the largest seating capacities in the country, the list of uses for Beaver Stadium is almost endless. In fact, it’s kind of crazy how it sits there idly for most of the year.
Here are some other things our staffers think Beaver Stadium could be used for.
Frankie Marzano: The NHL Winter Classic
The Winter Classic is a hockey game that is held outdoors every year on New Year’s Day, and it’s one of the NHL’s signature events. College football stadiums such as Michigan Stadium and Notre Dame Stadium have already hosted the event. With that said, can you imagine how epic a game between the Philadelphia Flyers and Pittsburgh Penguins would be at Beaver Stadium?
Penn State was already considered as a site for the 2017 Winter Classic between the Penguins and Flyers, but the university claimed it wasn’t feasible due to “facility challenges.” Still, central Pennsylvania serves as the perfect location for a match between these two franchises. Just imagine 107,000 passionate hockey fans packing into Beaver Stadium in the snow. It makes too much sense not to do it!
Alysa Rubin: Concerts
Concerts in the Bryce Jordan Center are awesome, but having outdoor concerts in Beaver Stadium would be absolutely electric. With a capacity north of 107,000, there would be plenty of space for folks of all ages to enjoy the artists that come to town. Although the trademark State College winters would prevent outdoor concerts during the winter months, Beaver Stadium could be rocking during the spring, summer, and maybe even between games in the fall, potentially with an atmosphere that could rival that of the White Out.
Connor Donohue: World Cup Match
This one would need to wait until 2026 when the United States will be a partial host of the World Cup. Soccer matches have been played at places like the Big House and the Horseshoe but never Beaver Stadium. Just imagine thousands of fans from two random countries descending into middle-of-nowhere Pennsylvania to watch their countries compete in the most prestigious competition in the world. It would be great for the local economy, and a packed Beaver Stadium on a World Cup gameday could rival a White Out.
It likely won’t happen because all games are going to take place in major cities and not State College, but a guy can dream. A soccer field probably couldn’t even fit inside of Beaver Stadium, but we’re not here for logistics. We’re here for fun!
Annie Kubiak: A Petting Zoo
I think Beaver Stadium should be used as a petting zoo. Imagine the field filled with dozens of dogs that students could play with between and after classes. Or maybe they could hold a large goat yoga class on one of Penn State’s new Wellness Days. Not only would the animals be cute and fun, but it could help with students’ mental health and well-being during a stressful semester.
Michael Tauriello: A Vaccination Site
Stadiums and arenas across the United States are quiet due to off-seasons in various sports, like Citi Field in Queens, New York. That said, it’s time to add Beaver Stadium to the list of stadiums and arenas turned into vaccination sites. There’s ample space to socially distance, and there’s plenty of parking if you take the tailgating lots into consideration. The only thing standing in Beaver Stadium’s way is the possibility of spring ball and a Blue-White game occupying the stadium from time to time. If Penn State wants to help the nationwide vaccination effort and get the fans back in the stands, it should definitely consider opening up Beaver Stadium to get folks vaccinated.
Dana Nunemacher: Willard Preacher Sermons
Bring the Willard Preacher to the big stage that he deserves! He’s a staple icon on Penn State’s campus. Currently, his stoop is at the bottom of the steps of the Willard Building. Bringing him to Beaver Stadium would be the Super Bowl of sermons. Let The Willard Preacher be heard! He deserves the right to spread his message that college kids suck and that alcohol is bad! Let him damn us all to Hell!
Matt DiSanto: Display The Land-Grant Trophy
Penn State football has worked hard to bring home that 76.2-pound hunk of hardware home the last two years. The least it could do is display it loud and proud at midfield. That way, Penn Staters near and far could appreciate the Land-Grant Trophy for what it really is — the greatest damn prize in college football.
