Pat Chambers Named Florida Gulf Coast’s Next Head Coach

Update, March 15: Florida Gulf Coast’s hiring of Pat Chambers is officially official, the team announced late Monday night. The Eagles introduced the former Penn State head coach with a press conference at 10 a.m. on Tuesday.

Original Story: Pat Chambers is likely heading to Dunk City, folks.

According to CBS Sports insider Jon Rothstein, the former Penn State men’s basketball coach is finalizing a contract to lead Florida Gulf Coast’s program. Rothstein says an official announcement from the Eagles is expected soon.

Chambers, a Philadelphia native, spent the 2021-22 season serving as a volunteer coaching assistant at La Salle. The Explorers posted an 11-19 regular-season record before falling in the second round of the Atlantic 10 Tournament.

Down in Fort Myers, Chambers will inherit a Florida Gulf Coast program that posted a 21-11 regular-season record and compiled 10 wins in the ASUN Conference. The Eagles are still searching for their first NCAA Tournament berth since 2017.

Chambers stepped down as Penn State’s head coach in October 2020 after allegations of misconduct prompted an internal investigation. The accusations surfaced after former Penn State guard Rasir Bolton alleged that Chambers made comments involving a “noose around [his] neck,” causing him to transfer from the program.

Chambers left Penn State with a 148-150 regular-season record over his nine-year head coaching gig. He led the Nittany Lions to a 2018 NIT Championship and was poised to bring a 21-10 Penn State team to the NCAA Tournament before the COVID-19 pandemic cut that dream short.

Back in September, Chambers joined Onward State’s podcast to talk more about his Penn State journey, his newfound passions, and more.
