Staff Picks: Which Penn State Celebrity Would You Want At Thanksgiving?

It’s that time of the year, folks.

You’re sitting around the Thanksgiving dinner table with your family eating a delicious turkey and explaining to your cousin from Michigan how that game really wasn’t that big of a deal.

Thanksgiving’s great — that goes without saying. Still, the holiday feels like it’s missing something. This got us thinking. Maybe we need more Penn State on Turkey Day!

There’s no better way to spend Thanksgiving than with someone from Penn State who you’ve never met before. So, we asked our staffers which Penn State figure they’d like to experience Thanksgiving with.

Nina Jeffries: Lara Spencer

The first person that immediately came to my mind was Good Morning America host Lara Spencer. My antique-loving parents have been obsessed with Spencer’s show, Flea Market Flip, for years. So Lara, I would like to let you know that you definitely have a seat at the Jeffries house for Thanksgiving.

Mikey DeAngelis: Micah Shrewsberry

Of all the Penn Staters who I’d want to sit down for a long meal with, I think men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry is the obvious pick. I’ve had nothing but positive interactions with Shrewsberry and feel like we could make pleasant conversation at the dinner table. From what I can tell, he is such a likable and caring guy, and I wouldn’t feel intimidated if I had to ask him to pass the mashed potatoes multiple times throughout the night.

Frankie Marzano: James Franklin

I would love to have an off-the-record conversation with James Franklin on literally anything at my dinner table. I don’t even want to talk about football. I’d just like to know more about him, such as what his favorite type of socks are, what his stance is on Joe Paterno’s legacy (don’t ever ask him that at a press conference), etc. All of this could have been asked while having beers with him in his basement, but that already happened.

CJ Gill: Bo Nickal

One Penn Stater at my Thanksgiving dinner? Who wouldn’t want to have stuffing and mashed potatoes with Iowa’s Daddy, Bo Nickal? The stud wrestler turned UFC fighter could devour a whole turkey by himself (as long as he wasn’t cutting weight). I think Nickal would be great at discussing all thesensitive political topics at the family dinner and starting all the drama. Who wouldn’t want to talk everything Penn State with the three-time national champ, too? It’s a bonus if he shows up rocking the blue hair again!

Brendan Wagner: Jack Ham

Jack Ham is one of the best players in Penn State and Pittsburgh Steelers history (the best NFL team). I would love for Ham to tell stories from his playing years and beyond all night.

Joe Lister: Neeli Bendapudi

This has to be the nerdiest answer of all, but I think a Thanksgiving dinner with Neeli Bendapudi would be great. I’d get to talk to her about running one of the largest academic institutions in the world, and my parents would get to ask about what tuition money is going to. Plus, there’s no easier way to convince Pat Kraft to join the Skin Out than convincing his boss to tell him to do it. Besides, maybe at the end of the night, I can use our own Tobey Prime’s “bend-a-booty” pickup line on her.

Gabe Angieri: Tom Verducci

Me being an aspiring journalist, I think the obvious answer here is Tom Verducci. There are very few people who are better at what they do than Verducci, and I would love to just sit down and pick his brain for a couple of hours. I think that would be pretty sick.
