Former USC Guard Bronny James Transfers To Penn State Hoops
The prince is headed (back) to Happy Valley.
LeBron James Jr., or Bronny, officially announced his commitment to Penn State men’s basketball after entering the transfer portal earlier this week.
James previously committed to Penn State last spring before making a last-minute flip to the University of Southern California. In his freshman year with the Trojans, James averaged 4.8 points per game and shot 36.6% from the field.
Despite an initial desire to stay in Los Angeles with his father LeBron, who plays for the Lakers, James decided to enter the transfer portal in an effort to secure more playing time.
“My dad is my sunshine, but he’s also just a guy who wants me to succeed no matter how far away that is,” James said.
James will search to become a consistent starter for the Nittany Lions, a team in need of star power following the departure of key players to the transfer portal or those who ran out of eligibility.
When James originally committed to Penn State last year, he expressed his excitement to play under head coach Mike Rhoades. After flipping to USC, he never got the chance to play in Rhoades’ system but cited what he saw from afar was one of his main reasons to come back to Happy Valley.
“I wasn’t familiar with coach Mike’s game. He got that dawg in him, for real, and I’m juiced to get to work with him,” James said.
James will join returning players Puff Johnson and other portal additions like former Xavier center Kachi Nzeh when the Nittany Lions return to play next winter. Lead guard Ace Baldwin Jr. has not revealed his plan regarding a potential return to Penn State at this time.
