Stephen Nedoroscik Remains In Third Place After Week Five Of ‘Dancing With The Stars’

“Dancing with the Stars” returned on Tuesday for the sixth episode of the season, “Dedication Night.”

Last week, Nedoroscik and his partner Rylee Arnold finished in third place with 62 points after a two-episode week. They have survived four eliminations so far this season.

For “Dedication Night,” the duo nicknamed Arnold-Pommel danced an Argentine Tango to “Seven Nation Army,” a song familiar to all Penn Staters, as they dedicated the night to men’s gymnastics.

“I really want to dedicate this performance to men’s gymnastics,” Nedoroscik said. “Gymnastics has given me everything. It gave me a family at Penn State and funneled me to the Olympics. So I owe all my success to men’s gymnastics, it’s my life.”

The gymnast also touched on the lack of funding that men’s gymnastics receive, saying that NCAA member institutions have been cutting many of their programs. He found extra motivation in not only representing men’s gymnastics well through his dance but also showing how important it is to many people.

Prior to the episode airing, Arnold-Pommel received custom Penn State men’s gymnastics merch from the school to rep before hitting the stage. Posting on his Instagram story, the pair showed off the presents before saying, “We Are Penn State!”

During this week’s rehearsals, judge Bruno Tonioli stepped in to practice to help Nedoroscik improve his form.

“One of the biggest problems is the dances almost look the same because he does steps, not dancing,” Tonioli said.

The judge asked Nedoroscik who he was during the dance, imploring him to lean into a character to help him perform better.

“He’s got determination and he learns quickly. So if he applies everything we worked on, he’ll go far,” Tonioli said.

Nedoroscik hoped to get his first nine of the competition on Tuesday, as he’s been improving each week and blowing the judges away but has yet to hit the mark.

“Bruno’s advice helped me so much, and men’s gymnastics made me the man I am today,” Nedoroscik said. “I just want to be able to pour my heart out into this performance for my sport.”

Nedoroscik hit the stage in a familiar sight, wiping his hands with chalk before walking to a pommel horse in his reflective suit. He performed a quick, flawless routine to the cheers of the crowd before Arnold strutted in to meet him and immediately got into the tango.

Nedoroscik truly took Bruno’s advice, hitting each step in the dance with confidence and power, at one point bending down on one foot and spinning in circles before hopping back up to dip Arnold.

The pair continuously strutted across the floor with hard steps between quick flourishes, including spins. Nedoroscik picked up Arnold over his shoulder and spun her as she kicked out into a half-split in the air. When she landed, he twirled her once more and then landed in their pose, with both half-lunging on the floor.

All three judges emphasized the power Nedoroscik brought and how much he had improved throughout the weeks.

Tonioli again called Nedoroscik a great student, sharing that he truly brought it and turned from a boy dancing into a man. Judge Derek Hough also said Nedoroscik stepped it up on Tuesday, taking a much-needed risk and leading the dance.

“That dance had impact! I mean, I will not forget that. That’s what we’re looking for, I’m always looking for something that stands out and pops,” Carrie Ann Inaba said. She continued to say that he was still a bit wobbly in his steps, with many boos from the audience.

Nedoroscik and Arnold headed up to Julianne Hough to find out their scores, where she asked him what felt different tonight.

“What’s feeling different is I really bought into the character, and I became the serious man. I’ve been showing Steve the guy, now it’s Steve the man,” Nedoroscik joked.

Arnold-Pommel received eights from Inaba, Tonioli, and guest judge Mark Ballas. Hough broke the trend and gave them a nine, their first of the season, to much excitement and celebration from the pair. This gave them 33 points out of 40 for the night.

Nedoroscik and Arnold finished in third place for the night, where they have sat all season. They survived another week of eliminations as model Brooks Nader departed.

Check back next week to see how Nedoroscik and Arnold fare for “Disney Night” and team dances, folks.
