Gameday Observations: Ohio State

Well. Here we go again.

Penn State football fell 20-13 to Ohio State on Saturday, which has been written on this website more times than I can count. There was plenty more action than what happened between the pylons, though. Let’s take a look at the sights and sounds of Saturday.

Flyover

Perhaps the coolest part of Saturday’s game was the military plane flyover. Orchestrated by two F-18 fighter jets, it was impossible to miss these guys — they just made too much sound. One of the best parts was that one of the pilots was a Penn State grad.

Several of the pilots also made a cameo at Bill Pickle’s Tap Room that night, leading the at-capacity bar in a “We Are” chant.

Upset Fans Throw Water Bottles, Shakers

As many Ohio State games go, fans were upset after Saturday’s loss. Students threw water bottles, shakers, and more to the field as they realized the game was over. While they didn’t cause any injury, a few of the objects came close to hitting, or made contact with, folks on the field.

Students also booed Franklin’s name when he was mentioned before the Alma Mater, and few took kindly to the loss on the internet or in person.

College GameDay Returns

College GameDay made its return on Saturday in all its glory. The show took a few wild turns, including Jason Kelce missing two field goals, Nick Saban dressing up like the Nittany Lion, and more. After a three-year drought since the 2021 Auburn game, it was nice to have the crew back. Comedian Keegan-Michael Key joined the show and, of course, picked his Nittany Lions to win.

Additionally, we chatted with the first guys in line on Friday, power-ranked the classic College GameDay signs, and took in all there was to see from the event.

James Franklin Rings Victory Bell After Loss

James Franklin, upset by Saturday’s loss, didn’t stick around for Penn State’s Alma Mater after the game. Instead, he made a beeline for the tunnel, though he paused briefly for an interaction with a fan, and stormed off mid-conversation.

The cherry on top? After that conversation, Franklin turned and rang the victory bell, a class gift to Penn State after the team reached the 500-win mark. The bell, of course, is only meant to be rung after a win.

Jason Kelce Smashes Fan’s Phone

Before the game even kicked off, Kelce made headlines after a viral interaction with a Penn State fan. While walking down Curtin Road, a fan chirped Kelce and called his brother, Travis, a homophobic slur for dating Taylor Swift.

Kelce responded by throwing the fan’s phone into the pavement. At present, the fan’s identity isn’t known, nor do we know if Kelce will face any repercussions for his actions.

Noon Games Suck

We here at Onward State have been pretty vocal about our thoughts on noon White Outs and noon pseudo-White Outs.

Saturday proved our point. It was difficult for the crowd to get into the game with such an early kickoff, and the sunlight took away from what should’ve been the drastic colors of the Helmet Stripe.

By no means did Penn State lose the game because it kicked off at noon. However, FOX certainly didn’t help anyone’s fan experience by moving the game up.
