No Refund Theatre Presents: The Brothers Grimm

No Refund Theatre returns once again to the hallowed ground of Forum 111, this time to bring us our favorite fairytales in one big wonderful package.

The story gives it a go at connecting every Brothers Grimm tale into one grim cinematic universe, which miraculously ends up being less confusing than the MCU and more accurate than the Disney movies. Plus, it’s funnier than both.

The cast takes on several roles each, all while trying to make sense of the stories themselves. Actors change costume (and role) mid-scene, the narrators get lost in their own stories, and everyone argues about the material. Yes, Little Red Riding Hood (Cap) did, in fact, sew a pile of rocks into the wolf’s stomach. Look it up if you don’t believe it.

“It was a bit of a scramble, but I wanted to do something that the cast was going to have a lot of fun with,” director Laura Spohn said.

The cast certainly had fun with it. Despite (or thanks to) being completely faithful to the originals, the play is hilarious. Laugh-a-minute is a disservice — it’s hard to believe anyone could get through that with a straight face. If you want to see excellent German accents, prolonged periods of crying, and mild fondling, look no further, it’s a ball.

Thanks to those ever-so-Grimm brothers, we have an exciting new play from No Refund Theatre. I’m sure the brothers are looking up at them and saying, “Man, someone finally got it right.”

NRT’s new play is on this weekend, Thursday to Saturday, in Forum 111. If you’re looking for a theatric universe that connects every single one of the Brothers Grimm’s centuries-old stories, look no further.
