Penn State Wrestling Remains At No. 1, Present Eight In Top 10 In National Polls

Penn State rolled to its first dual win on Saturday night against No. 18 Oklahoma on Friday, securing a 45-0 shutout of the Sooners and once again flexing its superiority to the rest of the NCAA field.

The Nittany Lions were ranked No. 1 in the third NWCA coaches poll on Tuesday, securing all but three first-place votes. No. 2 Ohio State received the rest after its dominant run in the National Duals Invitational this past weekend.

As for Intermat’s individual rankings, there are a few changes heading into week two of Penn State’s season.

Luke Lilledahl has risen to the No. 1 spot in the 125-pound weight class after defeating Oklahoma’s Conrad Hendrickson in a 14-4 major decision. The sophomore now sits above the defending national champion in Vincent Robinson of North Carolina State.

At 133 pounds, true freshman Marcus Blaze rose to No. 14 in the country after being unranked before the season. Blaze defeated Tyson Charmoli via an 18-3 technical fall on Friday.

Aaron Nagao has cracked the top 10 in the 141-pound class after his 9-5 victory over Alex Braun. The Nittany Lion is still chasing Big Ten opponents such as the defending national champion Jesse Mendez and Nebraska’s No. 3-ranked Brock Hardy.

Rocco Welsh dropped two spots to No. 4 in the 184-pound rankings. Although the Nittany Lion beat Anders Thompson via a 19-4 technical fall on Saturday, strong performances from Iowa’s Angelo Ferrari and Missouri’s Aeoden Sinclair at the national duals event this weekend bumped Welsh down two spots.

Heavyweight wrestler Cole Mirasola defeated No. 24 Juan Mora on Friday in a 5-2 decision, bumping the Nittany Lion into the top 10.

Shayne Van Ness, Mitchell Mesenbrink, Levi Haines, and Josh Barr remain at the top spots for their respective weight classes.

Various Penn State wrestlers will compete in the Black Knight Invitational in West Point, New York, this weekend. The tournament is slated to start at 10 a.m. on Sunday, November 23.
