Penn State Wrestling Sets New NCAA Record With 78 Consecutive Dual Victories

The dynasty has done it again, folks.

The Nittany Lions have now won 78 dual matches in a row after beating Rutgers 46-0 in the first Big Ten dual of the season. The new record surpasses the 77 consecutive victories of Division II program St. Cloud State, from 2017 to 2022.

Penn State wrestling’s winning streak dates back to February 2, 2020, when the Nittany Lions defeated the Maryland Terrapins 40-3, following a 19-17 loss to Iowa two days prior in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. If anyone is wondering, Penn State hasn’t lost a dual in 2,169 days. (That’s five years, 11 months, and eight days).

Since that loss, Penn State has rattled off 78 straight, including five-straight Big Ten regular season titles, three Big Ten Championships, four NCAA Championships, and 17 individual NCAA titles by eight different wrestlers. During that span, Penn State has outscored its opponents 2,712-514 in team points.

Head coach Cael Sanderson’s 16 seasons at Penn State have been near perfect, with a career of 225-16-2 since taking over in the 2009-10 season. He has helped Penn State to 12 national titles and nine conference championships.

Penn State defeated North Dakota State and Stanford on December 20 in the Journeymen Collegiate Duals to break Oklahoma State’s Division 1 record from 1937 to 1951 of 76 straight dual victories. The Nittany Lions already have a 60-win dual streak in their history when they went undefeated from 2015 to 2019. That streak is 6th in Division I history.

Penn State wrestling will be back in action on Friday, January 16, when the Nittany Lions take on the rival Hawkeyes from Iowa at 7 p.m. in Carver-Hawkeye Arena. The match will be broadcast on the Big Ten Network.
