[Photo Story] Penn State Softball Drops Weekend Series Against Wisconsin 2-1

Penn State softball opened Big Ten play at home this weekend, hosting Wisconsin for a three-game series at Beard Field. While the Nittany Lions showed flashes of explosive offense, they ultimately dropped the series two games to one.

The weekend had a bit of everything: a tough late loss, a big offensive game, and a close finish. There were a lot of momentum swings, some loud hits, and a home crowd getting back into the feel of softball season.

Penn State’s home opener delivered immediate drama, as a double weather delay set the stage for a tightly contested 5-4 loss Friday night. The team found its rhythm in the third inning, launching a pair of home runs to erase an early deficit and briefly seize control.

Despite the offensive surge, Wisconsin responded late. A game-tying home run in the sixth and a sacrifice fly in the seventh pushed the Badgers ahead, while Penn State’s final rally fell just short, a theme that would continue throughout the weekend.

Saturday flipped the script entirely. Penn State erupted for 14 runs in a high-powered offensive display, highlighted by Jordan George’s first-inning grand slam and multiple home runs from Breanna Hanik.

A six-run opening inning set the tone. Even as Wisconsin put runs on the board, Penn State consistently strung together hits across the lineup in its most complete offensive performance of the series.

Following Hanik’s home run, the dugout came alive, and it carried through the rest of the game.

After the win, the focus shifted from competition to community. Players lined the field to meet young fans, signing autographs and posters.

Sunday’s finale mirrored Friday in tone. Penn State built a 4–2 lead behind a big fifth inning that included a bases-clearing triple, putting itself in position to secure the series.

That lead slipped away in the seventh. Wisconsin scored four runs in the final inning to turn a Penn State advantage into a 7–4 loss.

Despite the result, the environment remained strong through the final pitch.

Penn State leaves the weekend with one win and two losses. The offense showed its upside, while the losses highlighted the need to close out late innings.
