Penn State History Lesson: Former Penn State Football Players Traded In The NFL This Decade

Former Penn State cornerback Joey Porter Jr. is now a Dallas Cowboy.
The Nittany Lion is leaving Pennsylvania and will play outside the state for the first time in his career after the Pittsburgh Steelers traded him ahead of Week 4.
With Porter finding a new home, let’s take a look at some other notable former Penn State players who have been traded in the past decade.
Joey Porter Jr.
As mentioned, Porter was traded to the Cowboys for a 2028 second-round pick and a 2027 sixth-round pick earlier this season.
The trade came after an offseason of contract disputes between the Steelers and Porter, who was entering the final year of his rookie contract.
A lingering back injury also kept the defensive back out of Pittsburgh’s first three games.
Porter suited up for the Cowboys on Sunday and played 45% of defensive snaps without being targeted. He’ll now look to make an impact on a struggling Cowboys defense as the season continues.
Porter spent four years with the Nittany Lions and started 31 games. In that time, he recorded 114 total tackles, two tackles for loss, one sack, one forced fumble, one fumble recovery, 20 pass breakups, and one interception.
Micah Parsons
Micah Parsons was traded from the Cowboys to the Green Bay Packers in 2025 in exchange for defensive tackle Kenny Clark and first-round picks in 2026 and 2027.
Parsons requested a trade after failing to reach a contract agreement with Dallas. Following the trade, he signed a four-year, $188 million contract with Green Bay, securing the extension he had sought from the Cowboys.
In his first season with the Packers, Parsons led the team with 12.5 sacks before suffering a season-ending torn ACL in Week 15. Parsons has not returned this season as he continues to recover from the injury.
Parsons called Happy Valley home for two seasons in 2018 and 2019, recording 192 tackles, 19 tackles for loss, 6.5 sacks, and six forced fumbles.
Odafe Oweh
Odafe Oweh was traded from the Baltimore Ravens to the Los Angeles Chargers during the 2025 season. Baltimore sent Oweh and a 2027 seventh-round pick to Los Angeles in exchange for safety Alohi Gilman and a 2026 fifth-round pick.
After joining the Chargers, Oweh recorded 28 total tackles, 7.5 sacks, 13 quarterback hits, and eight tackles for loss in 12 games, including two starts.
Oweh’s time in Los Angeles lasted only one season. This offseason, he signed with the Washington Commanders, where he’ll look to build on his strong finish with the Chargers.
During his time in Happy Valley, Oweh racked up 63 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, seven sacks, and two forced fumbles.
Jahan Dotson
Jahan Dotson was traded from the Washington Commanders to the Philadelphia Eagles on August 22, 2024. Philadelphia received Dotson and a 2025 fifth-round pick in exchange for a 2025 third-round pick and two 2025 seventh-round picks.
In two seasons with the Commanders, Dotson caught 84 passes for 1,041 yards and 11 touchdowns. The arrival of general manager Adam Peters and head coach Dan Quinn brought a new regime to Washington, and Dotson was dealt before the start of the 2024 season.
Across two seasons with the Eagles, Dotson recorded 37 receptions for 478 receiving yards and a touchdown. This past offseason, he signed with the Atlanta Falcons.
Dotson scored his first touchdown of the season Monday on a 31-yard reception against the New Orleans Saints.
At Penn State, Dotson had 183 catches for 2,757 yards and 25 touchdowns.
Allen Robinson
The Pittsburgh Steelers acquired Allen Robinson and the No. 251 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft from the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for the No. 234 overall pick in April 2023.
Robinson’s lone season with the Rams didn’t go as planned. He recorded 33 receptions for 339 yards and three touchdowns in 10 games before a foot injury ended his season.
Robinson spent one season with the Steelers, recording 34 receptions for 280 yards while serving primarily as a veteran depth receiver and blocker.
In 2024, Robinson joined the Detroit Lions and recorded three receptions for 30 yards. He announced his retirement from the NFL on his 33rd birthday in August, after an 11-year career.
At Penn State, Robinson emerged as a star, posting 177 catches for 2,479 yards and 17 touchdowns across three seasons.
Christian Hackenberg
Christian Hackenberg was traded from the New York Jets to the then-Oakland Raiders on May 22, 2018, in exchange for a conditional 2019 seventh-round pick.
The former Penn State quarterback never appeared in a regular-season game during his two seasons with the Jets. New York selected quarterback Sam Darnold with the No. 3 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft, and veterans Josh McCown and Teddy Bridgewater were also on the roster, leaving Hackenberg outside the Jets’ quarterback room.
His time in Oakland was brief.
The Raiders waived Hackenberg on June 12, 2018, just three weeks after acquiring him. Because Hackenberg was released before the season, the trade conditions weren’t met, and the Jets never received the seventh-round pick.
Hackenberg briefly joined the Philadelphia Eagles later that summer before his NFL career ended.
In three seasons as a Nittany Lion, Hackenberg threw for 8,457 yards and 48 touchdowns. He led the offense through the program’s final seasons without postseason eligibility in the post-Sandusky scandal era.
