UPUA Asks Faculty Senate To Extend Finals Overload Exam Policy To Entire Semester

The University Park Undergraduate Association met Wednesday, passing two pieces of legislation to expand overload exam conflict policies and continue its “We’re a Culture, Not a Costume” campaign for Halloween.

Resolution 08-13, Support of the Addition of Academic Overload to Faculty Senate Policy 44-35, urges Faculty Senate to extend its academic overload policies beyond finals week to be active throughout the semester. The resolution passed unanimously.

This policy would essentially put midterm exams in line with finals, so students could talk to their professors to schedule alternate exam times if, for example, they have three midterms scheduled for one day. The policy change is headed to Faculty Senate committee next week for approval.

Resolution 09-13, Support of “We’re a Culture, Not a Costume” Social Media Campaign, endorses UPUA’s campaign encouraging students to make culturally-aware decisions during the Halloween season. UPUA will also hang posters around campus and release a joint statement to the student body that any student organization will have the option to sign onto. The resolution passed unanimously.

Dan Murphy, director of Student Orientation and Transition Programs, opened the meeting with a brief presentation about how the office has grown over the past six years since its inception and how it’s continuing to expand and smooth student transitions. Reilly Ebbs and Josh Hamilton also spoke to the assembly about the Emergency Medical Student Association and the importance of getting CPR Certified.

Vice President Laura McKinney announced UPUA is continuing to pursue the implementation of a “Cub Pantry” pilot program for a smaller version of Lion’s Pantry at five locations across campus. More details will be announced in the near future pending approval.

UPUA President Cody Heaton will host his third “Eatin’ with Heaton” next Wednesday from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Multicultural Resource Center, 220 Grange Building.
