Staff Picks: Potential 24/7 Food Spots In Downtown State College

Downtown State College lacks something necessary to a college student’s life: 24/7 food.
Our staffers came up with some spots they think downtown should welcome and have open 24 hours a day.
Maya Thiruselvam: Waffle Shop
Sure, we have a Waffle Shop downtown, but I think they’re losing real money by not staying open 24/7. Not only would the food taste heaven-sent, it would also be the perfect place to sober up before your trek home. Whether it’s midnight or noon, I’m certain a breakfast burrito would solve all the world’s problems and be the perfect opportunity to combat that next-day hangover.
Ryan McInerney: Cava
We need a Cava downtown as soon as possible. I’m tired of Chipotle with its small and inconsistent portion sizes. Half the time it runs out of chicken or steak, and it costs an arm and a leg. Give me a 24/7 Cava now.
Brendan Wagner: McDonald’s
Bring it back.
Ella Wehmeyer: Any Diner
Any kind of 24/7 diner downtown would be such a great addition to the great food spots. A diner would allow people from the previous night out to grab some drunk food and those getting up early in the morning to grab a bit before work or class. You can’t go wrong with a classic diner.
Nathaniel Yerage: Denny’s
Denny’s is supreme. I applaud the genius of Denny. The sandwiches are glorious, the Grand Slams are suitable for kings, and everything else on the menu is just great. In contrast with other, similar (not as good) diners, the menu is massive. Denny didn’t limit himself to just breakfast, he tackled every meal with precision. The country-fried steak is a personal favorite, and the pot roast melt is divine. For those who don’t want late-night breakfast, Denny’s got it covered. They don’t only have waffles, like some of their “competition.”
Any conversation about late-night diners has to touch on vibes, of course. Denny did well, let me tell you. It’s everything you could want from a diner — vanishing servers, the occasional claw machine, massive booths, and, well, pancakes. As far as late-night diners go, Denny’s is damn near perfect.
My fellow staff members apparently have other places in mind. Pitiful. There isn’t a single option that can beat my Denny’s in this race, even Waffle House. On a late walk home, there’s nothing more I want to see than a beautiful Denny’s conveniently located downtown, close to my apartment. Denny, I hope you hear my prayers. I’m not picky, but anywhere on the west side would be great. Thank you, Denny.
Evan Halfen: Wawa
At home, there are dozens of Wawas everywhere open 24/7. Not having that luxury here in Happy Valley has been brutal. Luckily, Wawa should be coming relatively soon, but I need it here ASAP. Gotta have a Wawa.
Nolan Wick: Sheetz
It’s a travesty that the Sheetz on Pugh Street closed down in the first place. It had so many options and was so versatile while being in a central location, making it the perfect spot after a night out. Bring it back and justice will be served.
Joe Lister: Literally Anything But Another Sheetz
Yup.
