Seven Former Penn State Women’s Hockey Players Selected In 2026 PWHL Draft

Some more Nittany Lions are going pro, folks.
Seven former Penn State women’s hockey players were selected in the 2026 Professional Women’s Hockey League Draft on Wednesday night. The pool of talent joins Brianna Brooks and Lyndie Lobdell as the only Nittany Lion PWHL Draft selections. The latter were selected No. 32 overall to Vancouver and No. 40 overall to Seattle in 2025, respectively.
Here’s where Penn State’s newest professionals ended up after their run to the program’s first-ever Frozen Four.
Tessa Janecke: No. 3 Overall To PWHL Las Vegas
Viva Las Vegas.
Penn State’s first and only Olympic gold medalist is heading to Sin City for her first professional stop. She will join the PWHL’s Las Vegas expansion franchise as it suits up for its inaugural season in 2026-27. Las Vegas is one of four expansion franchises this year, alongside Detroit, San Jose, and Hamilton, Ontario. The team has not set a date to announce its nickname and overall branding.
Janecke left Penn State with 201 points, the most by a men’s or women’s player in school history. She holds program records in goals, assists, multi-goal games, shots on goal, plus/minus, points per game, goals per game, assists per game, shorthanded goals, and shots per game.
Safe to say Las Vegas got a dawg.
Leah Stecker: No. 27 Overall To Boston Fleet
Stecker became the second Nittany Lion off the board as she was shipped off to the Boston Fleet.
She appeared in 152 games for Penn State over four seasons, notching 12 goals and 45 assists. The defenseman tallied 83 blocks in her Happy Valley career.
Unlike Janecke, who was selected by a PWHL expansion franchise, Stecker is set to join one of the league’s six charter franchises. The Fleet were announced in August 2023 and lost the inaugural Walter Cup Finals 3-2 to the Minnesota Frost.
Maddy Christian: No. 33 Overall To Minnesota Frost
Speaking of the Frost, Penn State’s third-leading scorer from last season is headed up to Minnesota. The forward suited up in 153 games for the Nittany Lions, notching 46 goals and 38 assists in the process. She was selected to the All-AHA First Team and AHA Tournament MVP in her 2024-25 junior campaign.
The Frost didn’t only take home the inaugural Walter Cup title; they also went back-to-back in the league’s first two seasons. They took down the Ottawa Charge in four games in 2024-25, but lost the semifinal 3-2 to the eventual champion Montreal Victoire last season.
Katie DeSa: No. 37 Overall To Vancouver Goldeneyes
Penn State’s goaltender is heading north of the border, folks.
DeSa capped off her collegiate career in 2025-26 with a .936 save percentage over 31 games. She appeared in 81 contests for the Nittany Lions in total, leading them to a 64-13-3 record. DeSa recorded 1,550 saves and let in 113 goals in her Happy Valley career. She also holds program records for shutouts (25), winning percentage (0.818), and goals-against average (1.43).
The reigning back-to-back AHA Goaltender of the Year will join a Goldeneyes team entering its second year of play in the PWHL. Vancouver joined the league as the first announced expansion franchise ahead of the 2025-26 season. It finished with 37 points and missed the playoffs.
Katelyn Roberts: No. 43 Overall To New York Sirens
After 153 games in the blue and white, Roberts is swapping her uniform for teal and orange.
The forward notched 40 goals and 63 assists in her time at Penn State. She set the single-season program record for game-winning goals with seven in 2025-26. She was named to the All-AHA First Team in 2024-25 and All-AHA Second Team in her senior season.
The Sirens are also one of the PWHL’s original six franchises. They have failed to qualify for the playoffs in all three of their seasons so far, never finishing above sixth in the table.
Kendall Butze: No. 49 Overall To PWHL Las Vegas
Looks like Las Vegas loves its Nittany Lions.
One of Penn State’s best defenders in program history was selected by Las Vegas in the fifth round, pairing her back up with Janecke. Butze is Penn State’s highest-scoring defender ever with 94 career points, including 79 assists and 15 goals. She tabbed 155 blocks in her 151-game collegiate career.
The reigning back-to-back AHA Defenseman of the Year was also selected to back-to-back All-AHA First Teams and to the AHA All-Tournament Team.
Mya Vaslet: No. 66 Overall To PWHL Hamilton
Last but not least, one of Penn State’s former alternate captains is set to return to her home province to join the PWHL’s Hamilton expansion franchise. Vaslet appeared in 149 games for the Nittany Lions over five seasons, but only played four in 2024-25 due to an injury.
Vaslet notched 30 goals and 30 assists in her career and is tied for second place on the program’s all-time AHA Tournament scoring leaderboard.
PWHL Hamilton was announced on May 13 and is the league’s 10th franchise. It will also be the first PWHL team to not have an NHL counterpart in its city.
