Michio Kaku: In the Year 2100

In a magnanimous display of generosity, Penn State is providing not one, but two, world-renowned physicists to speak this year. On Thursday, theoretical physicist, author and futurist Michio Kaku will speak about “Future Science: Physics and Daily Life in the Year 2100.” (Spoiler: Still no jet packs.)

Penn State Likely to Close STS Program in June ’12

Earlier this week the Science, Technology, and Society program was informed that the a strategic review council had recommended its closure. The decision is not final at this point, as it must first pass through Faculty Senate and the Board of Trustees, but with a stated intention of closing the program by June 2012, the university does not seem to think that it will be a problem.

Tenured faculty will be transferred to other units and Penn State will make an effort to treat other faculty fairly, but effectively speaking much of STS found out this week that they would probably be laid off in the near future.

Students who are currently enrolled in the STS minor will be able to graduate with it. I know this because I am one of them.

What’s Geospatial Technology, You Ask?

You know how trippy it is when you GoogleEarth your house and you can see your car in the driveway? Or how your GPS knows exactly where and when to turn? Well, you have geospatial technology to thank for these wonders. Penn State Public Broadcasting's recently debuted Geospatial Revolution Project gives you the opportunity to learn more about this field of science than you probably already do.

Your Time to Shine

Are you the kind of person that sits around all day thinking of names for things (scientist, rapper, politician)? Well, the Eberly College of Science has just the opportunity for you! The Eberly College is adding a new student center to the Ritenour building:

The east wing of Ritenour Building will soon be home to science undergraduate co-op, internship, and externship information, as well as advising and career advice...vitally important career resources, brought together in one place. This new student center, designed specially for science students, will provide comfortable furnishings and space to study, learn, and collaborate.

It's like the HUB... only for science kids. Anyways, they need help coming up with a name for the student center. What would you receive for your efforts? The winner of the contest receives an iPod touch, a $250 gift certificate to the Penn State bookstore, and the chance to officially name the student center. Four runners-up will also receive a $50 gift certificate. You can enter as many times as you like until January 25.

Construction of Research Facility Progressing

How’s that one song go? “Each morning I get up to the…construction?” Yeah, that’s about right. Living in Pollock Halls, I can assure you that something is being built nearby. But what? Penn State is a couple months into the construction of the Millenium Science Complex, which was approved for construction last year. Yes, on the corner of […]
