Finding a Way for People to Turn Over a “New Leaf”

Walking down the narrow, dimly lit steps of 204 W. College Ave. and continuing through the door at the bottom, you take a minute to look around what is currently a work in progress. A wall across the room – painted so obnoxiously green that you are almost blinded – greets you immediately.

Looking closer still, you see there are dry-erase marker drawings on a white-board-painted table. But what is it? Facts. And figures. And a dream that’s about to become a reality. The dream – and the office space – belongs to New Leaf Initiative, State College’s newest non-profit organization.

What Should Onward State Write About?

Hello faithful readers. We here at Onward State have written about a lot in these past few weeks, from why to join a Sorority to the UPUA's marathon of arguments about the Student Handbook Commission. We've even brought back one of my most beloved features--The Natty Nittany.

But Onward State is a small organization. Stories can fall through the cracks in the bustling metropolis that is State College. That's why we're asking you, the readers, What should Onward State be covering?

Student Rapper Reps Penn State Colors

Not quite Wiz Khalifa's hit single, "Black and Yellow." It's Penn State student, Christian Gibbs, breaking into the rap world to rep life in Happy Valley in "Blue and White Penn State Anthem." Pint juggles a dual major in Forensic Science and Crime/Law Justice and still saves time to rep his school's iconic colors. Check out the video of his remix and tell us what you think.

Julia Trogele Layup Propels Penn State to Victory

With nine seconds left in the game, a lay up from Julia Trogele gave the Penn State women's basketball team a 67-65 road victory over Illinois on Thursday. The Lady Lions overcame a poor shooting performance and 24 turnovers to improve to 6-2 in the Big Ten.

Penn State headed into the match-up with Illinois having lost two of three Big Ten road games, including a 10-point loss to Purdue last week. Trogele, who had 19 points and 11 rebounds, and Nikki Greene, who had 16 points and 14 rebounds, made sure the Lady Lions would not get blown out again.

A Field Guide to the Penn State Twitterati

If you haven't noticed, we're big fans of Twitter here at @OnwardState. For those of you who don't tweet, though, it might seem like a confusing mess of @'s and #'s, follows and re-tweets. Here's a guide to who of the Penn State Twitter community is worth following (in less than 140 characters).

White Loop Etiquette: A Guide for Late Night Riders

Everyone knows the routine: the weekend rolls around, and now that Happy Valley is blanketed in ice and snow from the "ablogable snowstorm," many on-campus students, especially freshman in East Halls, take advantage of UPUA's White Loop extension.

For anyone who has never had the fortune of riding it, to say that the crowds get a little rambunctious would be putting it mildly. But hope is not lost! Here are a few tips, try to keep them in mind as you embark on your White Loop journey this weekend. Trust me, it will make it easier for everyone involved.
