FOX Big Noon Kickoff Personalities Should Stop Picking Fights With Penn State

FOX Big Noon Kickoff is at it again, folks!

Following Penn State football’s disappointing loss in the Big Ten Championship to Oregon on Saturday, December 7, the Nittany Lions had to wait and see where they would be seeded for the College Football Playoff.

On Sunday, December 8, the playoffs announced Penn State earned the No. 6 seed and will face No. 11 SMU in Beaver Stadium at noon on Saturday, December 21. The game will be broadcast on TNT. A few minutes after the announcement, Penn State Athletics announced the game against the Mustangs would be a White Out.

You’re probably wondering how Fox Big Noon Kickoff found themselves in the middle of this. Simply put, they put themselves in the middle of it. A few of the lesser-known personalities on the college football pregame show decided to comment under Penn State’s post and troll the Nittany Lions for making the noon game a White Out.

Brady Quinn, a former Notre Dame quarterback, thought it would be funny to troll Penn State multiple times in the comments after the graphic was posted. FOX, CBS, and NBC all share the TV rights for the Big Ten, and I think it’s a little weird one of those companies’ employees would go after and attack one of the conference’s schools.

The way Quinn decided to spell “whites outs” in his comment suggested he didn’t pay much attention in class during his time in South Bend.

Chris Fallica, a former ESPN employee, also went to the comment section for a quick jab at the Nittany Lions. Fallica is a researcher and contributor at FOX Big Noon Kickoff.

Fallica appears to allude Penn State would never make a noon game in Beaver Stadium a White Out. I think Quinn and Fallica were trying to be funny, but I’m here to tell the two that nobody shows up to your pregame show or laughs at your jokes.

Humor aside, at least a few analysts, and maybe even FOX itself, are clearly upset Penn State hasn’t made any of the games it’s broadcast over the last few years the annual White Out game.

It makes sense why FOX would want to broadcast a White Out as the revenue it could gain from the event would be sizable. On the other hand, Penn State is never going to make a regular-season noon game the White Out.

I have a simple solution. If FOX wants to air the White Out game, all you have to do is make it a night game, and every student, alumni, and fan would have no problem with it. However, I am probably asking too much for the folks over there at FOX to make a compromise.

It’s not TNT’s fault the playoff game in Beaver Stadium is at noon. There’s no denying the fact Penn State hosting SMU is the least appealing game from a national standpoint. It made sense the Nittany Lions were given the noon time slot.

It made even more sense why Penn State Athletics would make the matchup with SMU the White Out despite the noon kickoff, too. It’s the first College Football Playoff game in Penn State history and the first in Happy Valley. Everyone expected it to be a White Out game.

No matter what, if people at FOX and people at Penn State have differences, why would you publicize it? Could you imagine if ESPN employees Kirk Herbstreit or Nick Saban did such a thing to an SEC school after making the playoffs? It’s a bad look and childish from so-called “professionals.”

It didn’t stop there, either. FOX analyst and former Colorado quarterback Joel Klatt had a crash out on Twitter as the full field was announced. I agree this current format has serious flaws, but why are we attacking the teams and not the committee?

I didn’t see Klatt or the others attacking Boise State and Arizona State for earning a first-round bye even though each of its resumes suggested both should be outside of the top four. There is a clear flaw in the system with four conference champions earning byes, despite their actual rankings. Yet, not a peep about it from the FOX personalities.

If Ohio State had earned the No. 6 seed and the same path with the same resume as the Nittany Lions, do you really think Klatt and the rest of FOX would be acting the same way? No, they would not.

Klatt and his partner, Gus Johnson, love the “World Famous Buckeyes” and they would never have a meltdown on social media if the roles were reversed.

Heading to social media to bash a team in the conference you own the broadcast rights to is never a good look. It also doesn’t make any sense when you already know the Penn State community has poor feelings toward your network. And if your goal is to convince Penn State to make one of your noon games in the future a White Out, I don’t think you did yourself any favors.
