Onward State Welcomes You To ‘Spend A Summer Day’

As Penn State’s premier independent, student-run news blog, we here at Onward State would like to officially welcome you to campus and “Spend A Summer Day!” Simply by finding this post, you’re headed in the right direction to getting some of the best features, news, and sports content available about anything and everything Happy Valley.

We rounded up some of our most popular and useful posts to give you a taste of Penn State. So while you’re roaming around campus, falling asleep paying attention to presentations, or driving back to wherever you call home, feel free to peruse some of our archived posts. And be sure to stop by and say hi at our table in Eisenhower Auditorium!

Campus

Worst Buildings – Penn State is a beautiful place with a beautiful campus and tons of beautiful, photogenic buildings. Except for a few. Some of the buildings, for lack of a better word, are just plain ugly. Don’t let these deter you though, the good ones make up for it.

Where’s the coffee? – You’re closer than you think to your morning (or afternoon…or midnight) cup of coffee, pretty much anywhere on or off campus at Penn State. Our interactive map will help you discover some new spots to grab a cup. Plus, with the “map” aspect, you can pinpoint both the location and fastest route.

Food – It’s no secret that Penn State is home to some of the best food a college kid could ask for. Whether you’re hungover, can’t decide what flavor to get at Wings Over, or are tired of the same-old at the dining halls, we’ve got you covered.

Study Spots – College, obviously, is not all fun and games — you’re going to have to spend some serious time hitting the books. No worries though, we’ve tested and compiled some of the best spots to hunker down (potentially all night) and get your learn on.

Student Life

Housing – On-campus housing offers a host of living options, something perfect for every preference. We’ve debated what each hall has to offer, and better yet laid out the benefits of each. Now, you don’t have to ask your upperclassmen friends where they lived and if they suggest that hall and why.

Overheard – One of our staples here at Onward State is our Overheard series. We’ve spent hours listening to people say some of the most ridiculous things, and documented it all for your reading pleasure. Some of our best include overheard at (Sorority) Bid Day, in the women’s bathroom at THON (installment one and installment two), and, the original, at Canyon Pizza.

Penn State News

A few (75) things to know – Surely you know or have recently learned that Penn State is a big place with a lot going on. We compiled a guide of sorts to give Penn Staters an idea of what they should know before attending school here in Happy Valley.

Current Events – Unfortunately, we can’t link you to every news story we’ve ever written because we’ve written news about everything. From intensive coverage of the Sandusky Scandal and its updates to the not-so-hard-hitting news of Penn State’s opinion on Oreo Thins, we’ve covered it all. For a little taste of what happened last year at Penn State, check out this retrospective on the 2014-15 school year.

Sports – In addition to news-news, there’s always something going on in Penn State sports-news. Recently, a few Penn Staters won the World Cup while another Penn Stater and his adorable, courageous daughter accepted an award of a different kind — an ESPY for perseverance for Leah Still’s battle with cancer.

So Cute And So State

Penn State Babies – Sure, babies are cute, but Penn State babies are extremely cute. If (or when) you have Penn State babies of your own, make sure to tell them everything you will learn during your time in Happy Valley. (Unless they’re boys. If so, tell them these things instead).

Penn State Dogs – If babies aren’t really your thing, how about Penn State dogs? Any dog can be a Penn State dog, and we found some of the best.

Penn State Tattoos – Neither babies nor dogs your thing? The best permanent Penn State body art we could acquire pictures of will probably make up for it. Looking for something a little more FTK? We’ve also found the best THON tattoos.

There you have it, some Penn State basics and Onward State staples. To get more great content from the best independent, student-run media outlet, feel free to follow us on Twitter @OnwardState, like us on Facebook, or bookmark our site’s homepage. Heck, make it your homepage too!
