Staff Picks: College GameDay’s 2020 Guest Picker

It’s that time of the year, ladies and gentlemen! College GameDay is returning to Happy Valley for the fourth straight year in a row ahead of No, 18 Penn State football’s matchup with No. 3 Ohio State.

In 2017, Ki-Jana Carter returned to his old stomping grounds to make picks when the morning show famously returned to Penn State. He was followed up by other alumni such as Keegan Michael-Key in 2018 and Lara Spencer in 2019.

So who will be the lucky person to join Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso, and the rest of the gang to make their picks? Our staffers offered their thoughts of who would make a great celebrity picker.

Connor Donohue: Mike Gesicki

I love me some Mike Gesicki, and so has Ryan Fitzpatrick this season. The former Penn State tight end has two touchdowns on the season and has been a shining star on a below-average Dolphins team.

He also brings the energy and everyone loves a College GameDay picker that brings the energy. I mean, just look at how hype he gets after a score? That’s the kind of energy we would want to see from a guest picker!

Otis Lyons: Ali Krieger

There aren’t many more successful Penn State alums than soccer star Ali Krieger. Since she left Happy Valley in 2006, she’s had a prolific professional career that includes more than 100 appearances for the United States.

She knows how to win, so hopefully, her guest picker status can give the Nittany Lions the edge on the field. Who is more qualified than a two-time World Cup winner?

Dana Nunemacher: The Willard Preacher

This week’s guest picker should be no other than State College’s own Gary Catell. Catell, or The Willard Preacher as Penn State students know him, deserves this spotlight. Imagine the platform this could give him! He could send all of America to Hell on national TV!

The only downfall here is I’m not sure if The Willard Preacher would be picking Penn State to win. He’s always wearing his iconic red sweatshirt and I am honestly unsure if Catell actually likes Penn State. Either way, get this man in the spotlight.

Owen Abbey: Trace McSorley

It is time to bring TikTok’s greatest viral sensation back to where it all began. McSorley would be a great guest picker, especially since he was the last Penn State quarterback to beat Ohio State.

On top of that, he can stoke some rivalry flames in State College as his Baltimore Ravens take on the Pittsburgh Steelers the following day. McSorley could bring some of that TikTok hype to College GameDay, and hopefully become a good luck charm for the actual game itself.

Matt Rudisill: Anthony “Spice” Adams as Cream E. Biggums

Spice Adams had a great career playing for the Nittany Lions, as well as the San Francisco 49ers and the Chicago Bears in the NFL. However, he has become more famous through social media with more than two million followers on Instagram and Twitter combined. His alternate persona, Cream E. Biggums, would be an electric character on College GameDay.

Biggums claims to play 12 different position designations, on top of being a head coach, assistant coach, and “a plethora and a barrage of other things.” Biggums’ versatility on the field and as a coach will lead to unique analysis that has never been seen. An entertaining personality like Adams would be a perfect representation of Penn State and provide a fun experience for viewers at home.

Matt DiSanto: Lisa Salters

If I’m an ESPN bigwig sitting in a fancy-schmancy office in Bristol, Connecticut trying to figure out who to grab for College GameDay, I’d be looking for the easiest option. After all, the coronavirus pandemic makes logistics a nightmare. Luckily, ESPN needs to look no further than one of its top sideline reporters.

Lisa Salters, a 1988 Penn State graduate, would make the perfect GameDay picker. Her sports knowledge is nearly unmatched and she’s already primed to shine in the spotlight. Salters’ Monday Night Football experience could even make her Penn State’s most accomplished GameDay guest.
