Gameday Coverage: Penn State vs. USC

It’s White Out week in Happy Valley, folks.

Penn State football has fallen flat in its first two Big Ten games, falling 24-20 to Wisconsin and 34-13 to Northwestern. Back-to-back losses and a stuttering offense have created one of the flatter White Out week energies in recent memory.

But college football is magical, and anything can happen on Saturday. The No. 19 USC Trojans come marching into Beaver Stadium for Saturday night’s 7:30 p.m. kickoff.

Here’s everything you need to know ahead of the matchup.

Television

NBC will broadcast the game, with Noah Eagle on play-by-play and Todd Blackledge on color commentary. Kathryn Tappen will report from the sideline.

Radio

Penn State Sports Network — Steve Jones, Jack Ham, Brian Tripp

Local: 99.5 FM, 103.7 FM, 1450 AM, SiriusXM: 85, 179, 249, XM App

Weather

Happy Valley will be a crisp 62 degrees Fahrenheit at kickoff, according to AccuWeather. Cloud cover sits at 21%, with wind gusts up to 6 mph.

The probability of precipitation is 1%.

Injuries

Since USC is a Big Ten opponent, Penn State’s injury availability report is available ahead of kickoff.

Receiver Koby Howard remains Penn State’s most notable inactive. Matt Campbell announced that the sophomore would be out for an “extended period of time” before the Wisconsin game.

Defensive ends LaVar Arrington II, Max Granville, Mason Robinson, and Dayshaun Burnett will not suit up on Saturday. Arrington II had a “cleanup” surgery on his knee and is expected to remain sidelined for the next few weeks.

Granville suffered a season-ending injury in practice ahead of the Temple game and will miss the rest of the season, as will Robinson, who was injured at the start of spring ball.

Cornerbacks Joshua Johnson, Christian Askew, and Tyler Armstead are also listed as out, along with tight end Cooper Alexander and offensive lineman Will Tompkins, who will miss the rest of the season after suffering a “unique” injury during pregame warmups before Buffalo, Campbell said.

Linebacker Cam Smith and kicker Christiano Rosa are also listed as out.

Linebacker Alex Tatsch and defensive tackle Armstrong Nnodim, both of whom missed the first two games of the season, are again listed as questionable for Week 6.

Series History

The Nittany Lions trail the Trojans 6-5 in the all-time series; however, Penn State leads the regular-season series 4-3.

The two squads first clashed in 1923, when USC won 14-3 in the Tournament of Roses Game, but Penn State holds the most recent victory, coming back from a 20-6 halftime deficit to win 33-30 in overtime in 2024. Quarterback Drew Allar had a wild night in Los Angeles, throwing for 391 yards and two touchdowns, but also tossed three interceptions. Kicker Ryan Barker booted the game-winning 36-yard field goal.

Prior to 2024, USC had won three straight matchups against the blue and white. Penn State last won in 1996.

The Nittany Lions have been outscored 254-247 across all 11 matchups with the Trojans.

Betting Lines

Shockingly, Penn State is a 1.5-point favorite against the Trojans, according to DraftKings Sportsbook. The over/under is set at 54.5 points.
